Kuwait airlift to ‘Operation Ganga’: Largest evacuation ops carried out by India

New Delhi: More than 18,000 Indians have been evacuated safely back to their home countries from Ukraine which was hit by a war through special flights for the past week when the Russian invasion in this country observed. Under the ‘Ganga Operation’ flight, 76 Central Government was sent to Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova to save Indian citizens who were trapped in Ukraine.

Let’s take a look at some of the other major rescue operations that India undertook in the recent past: 

– In 1990, the Government of VP Singh conducted the biggest evacuation of India during the Gulf War, with Indian water and the Indian Air Force together evacuated more than 1.7 lakh citizens. According to the previous report by HT, there are reservations about the evacuation exercises provided by the cost, the correspondent said that he had spoken at length to KP Unnikrishnan, then Telecom Carnet in the VP Singh cabinet.

– When the war between Israel and Hezbollah, Lebanese militant group, broke out in 2006, ‘Operation Sukoon’ was hired to evacuate Indians, Sri Lanka and Nepalese, and Lebanese citizens with Indian partners. According to media reports, this is one of the biggest evacuations carried out by the Indian Navy, where 2,280 people, including 1,764 Indians, 112 Sri Lanka, 64 Nepalese citizens and 7 Lebanon with Indian partners, were saved from the war zone.

– ‘Operation Safe homecoming’ was launched in 2011 to evacuate Indians from Libya when the civil war broke to overthrow the country, Muammar Gaddafi’s dictator. More than 15,400 Indian citizens were brought back safely on special flights from Libya’s Tripoli and Sabha, and Egypt Alexandria and Malta. Evacuation also takes place by sea with the help of the Indian Navy.

– ‘Operation Raha’ was launched in 2015 to evacuate almost 4,000 Indians, along with foreign nationals from 26 countries, from Yemen who were hit by a war through special flights and Indian naval ships. India’s evacuation from its citizens was very successful so that the US Embassy suggested American citizens also seek help from Indian officials to leave the capital city of Yemen Sanaa.
