Chennai to get its youngest and first Dalit woman as mayor; meet R Priya

Chennai will hold the youngest Dalit and first as mayor after the ruling party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) named R Priya (28) to post on Thursday.

 

Indirect elections for the Mayor and Chairperson for the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will be held on Friday (March 4). However, with DMK has 153 council members from a total of 200 wards, the selection of Priya is a previous conclusion.

 

Priya will be the third woman to become Mayor of Chennai after Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman. The grandson of the former DMK MLA Chimai Sivam, he came from a family with a strong political background. His father, R Rajan, is the Regional Secretary for DMK, according to minute news. Priya was chosen as a board member from number 74 after his party registered a landslide victory in the local body election Tamil Nadu Nadu Nadu.

 

DMK bagged all 21 city companies, with 946 wards in the company, 2,360 in the municipality and as many as 4,388 in Panchayats City.
