A new Australian woman fell into a geothermal drain hole that opened under her in a popular tourist village in New Zealand. According to The Guardian, the woman was rushed to the nearest hospital after suffering a severe injury. He was swallowed by a two-meter wide hole when opened suddenly on the path near the entrance of the thermal village of wha-manahewarewa in Rotoreua, on the northern island of Central.
The village general manager, Mike Gibbons, told the outlet that the woman’s husband was also injured when trying to help her get out of the hole. Then, the two guides nearby and a local weaver all ran to help and collectively managed to get it out of the hole, added Gibbons. He was taken to Rotorua Hospital, where he was in a serious condition but stable on Friday morning.
Wakewarewa is a geothermal area located near the Taupo volcano zone. The hole was reported to be a depth of about 3.3 feet and was destroyed open on the fumarole, which is a hole near the volcano that emit hot gas and steam. This gas reaches extreme temperatures, sometimes -sometimes as hot as 400 degrees Celsius.
Speaking to ABC Australia, a village spokesman said that the land might have been compromised after the new heavy rainfall in the area. Separately, a witness told the outlet that the area had been “steaming” for a week but people were still going close to him. However, cones were also placed there, who did not stop people, eyewitnesses added.Now, the village will be temporarily closed until the full investigation and assessment has been carried out by the New Zealand health and safety regulator.
